A Week on the Web

This week, the surfing world witnessed an historic event.  Robert Kelly Slater, the undisputed greatest surfer of all time, failed to make the cut for the remainder of surfing’s World Championship Tour when he was eliminated from the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia.

Kelly is my age, born on February 11, 1972, in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  He began surfing at an early age and quickly rose to the top of our sport. His professional career has spanned decades, a period over which he has amassed an unprecedented number of achievements and records.

Kelly holds more world titles than anyone in the history of professional surfing--  a staggering eleven--  with his first world title coming in 1992 and his most recent in 2011.

In addition to his championship titles, Kelly holds numerous other records, including the most career event wins (56) and the most career prize money.  He’s had 32 perfect 10’s.  He won surfing’s most prestigious event at the world’s most dangerous wave, the Pipeline Masters, at the age of 50 and is now an eight-time Pipeline champion. He’s won three Triple Crowns and an Eddie Aikau Invitational.

I reckon Kelly is not just the greatest surfer of all time but that he is the single greatest athlete of all time.  You have Tiger in golf.  You have Tom Brady as the greatest quarterback.  You have the Mikes—Jordan, Tyson and Phelps.  Willie Mays.  Nobody has so completely dominated over such an extended period as Robert Kelly Slater.

Thanks for the memories, Kelly.

There was a lot of other great content around the internet this week, too:

  • This article is about a recent lawsuit involving financed premiums for life insurance, and it provides some interesting insights as to do’s and don’ts.

  • There was this beauty from the apparel company Don’t Care’s Instagram of The Froghouse in Newport Beach:

  • At the end of March 2022, we wrote about what a bad time it was to buy real estate.  This is from the Fed’s website this week.  …Check the dates. (The photo is linked):

  • There was Scottie Scheffler’s final round at the Masters:

  • This one is actually a couple of years old, but I just discovered it this week.  It’s a great instructional video about structured products—  if you’re not familiar with structured products, I highly recommend this.  It’s from the old Simon, now part of iCapital:

  • And last but certainly not least, we took out the Great Depression in interesting fashion this week, as we see from this chart just issued by Goldman Sachs:
